On Friday, March 23rd, we cast off lines at Banana Bay Marina and started the watery trip up the Intra-Coastal Waterway (ICW) en-route to Virginia. We anchored when possible and stayed in marinas when necessary.
We wanted to sail in the ocean but a stiff north wind prevented that so we took the ICW route. The bridges of Miami were a torment. Each bridge had to opened to allow our 49 ft mast to pass through and every cantankerous bridge has its own opening times. Often, we motored in circles for nearly a half an hour waiting for the opening time to arrive.
After 33 bridges and six days, we arrived in Merritt Island Florida where we visited our friends, Jim and Vicki who live there on their sailboat.
Along the way we passed hundreds of fabulous motor yachts.
and some 'not so fabulous'.
Tonight we are in Brunswick, Georgia. The thunderstorms, predicted to hit today as we sailed north, have politely decided to wait until tomorrow. We'll stay here until the weather issues pass out to sea. On Saturday, we'll cast off lines again and press further north.
We are eager to see our Hidden Lake friends. Have the 'Red Solo Cups' ready.
